BY GRAHAM CLARK Tears of both joy and sadness trickled down the face of part owner Ed Hoddell who insisted there is a ‘racing God’ after Mole Court secured a highly emotional success when completing a four-timer with a tenacious victory in the Close Brothers Amateur Jockeys’ Handicap Chase on day one of The Showcase today. The Ben Pauling-trained six-year-old received the biggest cheer of the day on walk back into the famous winner’s enclosure when digging deepest of them all under Jack Andrews in the three miles and one furlong prize to add to his brace of wins at Worcester and last time out victory at Stratford-upon-Avon. Racing beyond an extended two miles and six furlongs for the first time, the 9-1 chance found plenty of stamina in reserve late on to deny Midnight Our Fred by half-a-length with stablemate Wick Green a further length back in third much to the delight of Hoddell, whose wife Tina is battling an illness. Hoddell, who is based in Hartpury, said; “There is a racing God and he has smiled down on us today. That is all I can say. All our friends are over there. I’m so happy and so sad at the same time. “It is incredibly emotional, and I’d like to say a huge thanks to Ben and all the team up at Naunton Downs as they are an amazing team up there. It is just wonderful. “We did a little bit of work up there. Ben and Sophie through the whole process of building the yard have been incredible. “They are great people to work for and great people to have a horse with. They are just wonderful people. I didn’t have time to think about the race. “There are four of us involved in the horse my father-in-law Michael, Oliver and Lizzie (Troup) and myself. We called him Mole Court as he was the initials of the people. It is just wonderful.” Equally emotional was the Naunton handler who hopes the victory would give the Hoddell family ‘every bit of joy they deserve’. Pauling said: “Ed basically single handedly with his whole team built my new yard and halfway through the build his wife Tina fell ill and very sadly she is not very well at all. We don’t know how long (she has left) but hopefully this will have given her everything. “She is the most incredible person. Tina, we do love you lots. It is quite hard to talk about but this horse means a lot to everyone. This means so much. We all love winners here, but I don’t think I’ve ever felt like this. “Tina and the Hoddells are the most amazing family and I hope this gives them every bit of joy they deserve.” Ben Pauling is preparing a small but select team for next week’s Unibet Jump Season Opener at Chepstow.
Awaythelad has been earmarked for a tilt at the Grade Two Unibet Persian War Novices’ Hurdle on the Friday card of a two-day fixture. The six-year-old was placed at Uttoxeter, Ascot and Fontwell last season and could benefit from that experience in what is always a competitive contest. Pauling told Sky Sports Racing: “He just wasn’t quite right last season and is still a maiden. “But you quite often see, with a bit of experience under your belt, a second-season novice goes well in a race like that. “You might not be the best novice hurdler for the rest of the season but experience helps and we’re aiming him for that.” Galahad Threepwood closed last season with a disappointing effort at Cheltenham after falling heavily at Warwick. However, he had previously scored at Doncaster and is a possible contender for the Silver Trophy Handicap Hurdle. “He was a bit tricky to win with last year but did win one and he’s got loads of gears, so he could do that sort of race,” added Pauling. Jipcot was 11th in the Triumph Hurdle on his first start for Pauling after landing a Pau double under Patrice Quinton. The trainer reported: “He’s a lovely French horse we’ve bought who we probably rushed a little bit when running in the good juveniles towards the end of last year. “He’s come back in looking great so he’ll go for the four-year-old handicap hurdle.” Pauling finished last term with a career-best tally of 80 winners and is keen to build on that with another strong campaign. He said: “The yard’s thriving, everyone is in a great place and it’s a really enjoyable time for us at the moment. “Last season went so well that you sort of have to pinch yourself, but at the same time as everyone is saying how amazing it was, you’ve now got to stick to it. “We’ve got some fabulous owners who have bought some very nice horses so hopefully we’ve got some really nice ones to go to war with.” It’s Gambie’s world and we’re just living in it.
What a star he is as he notches up another win at Bangor-on-Dee today under a great ride from Beau Morgan. Huge congratulations to all connections. Enjoy the celebrations! Gieves gets off the mark and wins in style under a great ride from Kielan Woods.

The homebred daughter of Kayf Tara showed real maturity on her debut when her rivals decided to have a little pre-race party! A very genuine win from a lovely mare, we are absolutely delighted for Mrs B Henley and connections. A wonderfully timed ride from Kielan Woods on Chess Player to take the win at Stratford tonight for Mrs Rachel & Mr John Brodie.
Trailing the field until the home turn, Kielan moved the son of No Risk At All to the outside ready for the challenge. Asked for more, jeez did Chess Player respond! The now three time Chase winner stormed home for a 21 length win. Congratulations to owners, the Brodie’s BPR HORSES - LIFE AFTER RACING
Meet KILDISART Breeding: Dubai Destination ex. Princess Mairead Total earnings: £174,746 A good horse on the racecourse, a good horse off. After a very successful racing career, Kildisart is loving his next chapter with Robbie & Sarah Llewellyn. Sarah and Kildisart competed in their first show over the weekend and qualified for the Retraining of Racehorses Championships at Aintree next year!! Kildisart’s last trip to Aintree Racecourse was in 2019 when he won the Grade 3 Betway Handicap Chase. What a way to debut!! Congratulations team If you have a Thoroughbred that we used to train do let us know what they're up to! We love hearing about their careers after racing Ben Pauling Racing announce a new satellite yard a few minutes away from their Naunton Downs base. The yard offers twelve stables and will be overseen by CCI5* International Event Rider Lucy Jackson.
“I have always been keen on providing our horses with a high level of basic schooling so that they can use their bodies correctly to achieve their full potential and in turn help prevent avoidable injuries. "We have sent horses to Lucy for the past couple of years and now we are at a size where having our own satellite yard to provide schooling and specialised fitness work makes sense” explains Pauling. “Lucy has years of experience and has enjoyed great success producing and competing high level Sporthorses both in the UK and in New Zealand. Lucy really understands the Thoroughbred and we are delighted to have her expertise as part of the Ben Pauling Racing team to focus solely on our horses”. Jackson has pre-trained racehorses from numerous respected trainers alongside her Eventing career for the last 20 years. “I adore working with Thoroughbreds for their quick-thinking, intelligence and athleticism. I strongly believe that my flat work, hill work and pole work can really benefit horses psychologically and physiologically. My aim as part of the Ben Pauling Racing team is to help maximise the horses’ longevity within the sport, as well as enhance their performance. It’s an honour to be joining such a successful and progressive team as Ben & Sophie’s. I can’t wait!” The yard will be in action from 1st September 2023. Story courtesy of Racing Post.
Ben Pauling and Lorcan Williams are set to make their debuts at the Galway festival with the classy but frustrating Your Darling in Friday's Guinness Galway Blazers Handicap Chase (6.00). British interest is sparse across the seven-day meeting but connections are hopeful of a bold run from the eight-year-old – who was compared to Best Mate in his early days by Henrietta Knight, who bought him. Williams, whose only ride in Ireland came at the Punchestown festival six years ago, has been given the opportunity with Pauling's regular rider Kielan Woods serving the final days of a lengthy whip ban and Luca Morgan out injured. "It was a pleasant surprise," said the jockey, who will fly over on Friday for the race. "I'm delighted to be stepping in but it's unfortunate for Kielan as he's out at the moment and the same with Luca. "I'm just lucky to step in while they're out. It's a big day and he's running for some really good owners, hopefully I can get the job done. I rode at Punchestown and it was a bit different but I've had plenty of rides in some high-class races and I won't treat it any differently." Your Darling produced the best performance of his career when winning a £35,000 handicap chase following a 231-day break at Ascot last year and has been kept fresh, with Friday's race set to be his first since January. Williams added: "He's fantastic first time out as he showed when he won at Ascot in November and he ran a really good race that day to win quite impressively. He goes well fresh so fingers crossed." We think Gambie Tiep enjoyed his time in Scotland as he makes the long trip to Perth well worth while after making it back to back wins under Liam Harrison.
Huge congratulations to all connections. They’ve done it!!
Sub 9 hours for this epic team! A challenge harder than they anticipated but grit and determination saw them through. Still time to donate if you haven’t already to this incredibly important charity.
