Well it’s been a while…. Apologies for the lack of communication, I have been on holiday for two months!
The summer months have been pretty quiet at Ben Pauling Racing, as most of the horses went out to grass leaving only 4 in full training. Despite this we have managed to have 4 winners already this season. Le Breuil kicked off our winning tally with a very impressive win in a bumper at Warwick on the 7th May, Richard Johnson spoke very highly of the horse. Shortly after the run he was turned out and has just returned back in along with all the others. In the last blog I wrote about Newton Geronimo’s surprise win at Taunton. Following that run he has gone on to win two more races at Fontwell and Worcester. Having previously refused to run twice, he has now transformed into a totally different horse both at home and at the racecourse with a much more settled attitude and seems to be thriving from his work and races. He is running tomorrow at Market Rasen so hopefully he can continue his winning ways. Our other winner was Calva D’Honoure who completed a double on the day for us at Southwell first time out in a bumper ridden by David Bass. He is not the biggest of horses but showed a great attitude making all and recording very impressive figures. It was great to see him on the course as he had picked up a pelvic injury the year before. He was also turned out shortly after his race and he will be another to look forward to next season.
Ben has been extremely busy at the sales this year having bought 13 store horses from Doncaster, Goffs Landrover Sale and Tattersalls Derby Sale. We have been very busy breaking all these horses in and a few have started hacking away up the gallop this week which is very exciting. They will be turned away shortly for a small break before returning to training at the beginning of August. Ben has also bought a few horses privately in Ireland and we have a number of new owners that we are very much looking forward to working with this season.
As well as new horses as we have got new members of staff that have started here at Bourton Hill Farm, we seem to be growing by the minute. Our new members of staff are Camilla Cotton who is our new secretary having previously been with John Ferguson. She will be a huge asset on the horses as well as in the office. Greg Walters recently arrived from a point to point yard in Leicestershire, he has fitted in brilliantly and already been a fantastic help with the breakers, he is a very accomplished rider and will continue to ride in point to points in the coming season. Alex Ferguson- another excellent jockey who is an Amateur at the moment and has plenty experience for his age having had three rides at the Cheltenham and Aintree Festivals this year and rode round the national fences as well. Dougie Gittins has taken on the role as our media manager, he studied Film, TV and Theatre before setting up his own small production company. His passion for both racing and media has brought him to where he is now and it will be great to be able to bring racehorse ownership into the modern day using film. Dougie has also set up a Ben Pauling Racing YouTube channel so it is easy for everyone to watch the season progress. Please do all keep up to date with our website as there will be lots of improvements in the next few months, like the new video page.
Most of the horses are back in now from their holidays. We are still waiting for about 15 more to return from various different places and when they are all back we will have around 60 horses in training for the coming season. During the summer there have been changes to the bottom of the barn where the old walker was. The old walker is being moved outside and in its place are three rows of new stables with 16 more stables than last year. The yard is up and running and is coming together now with all the steam cleaning and painting finished. We can look forward to the two months of walking and trotting before letting the season commence!
